Man-made diamonds are well on their way to becoming women’s most affordable best friend. It is important to note that man-made diamonds also called synthetic or lab created diamonds do not simulate diamonds because they are actually diamonds. They have the exact same physical, chemical, and optical properties as a natural diamond. They are not mined from the earth but are instead made in a laboratory.
While it takes millions of years for a “natural” diamond to form deep underground, a man-made diamond of equivalent size, luster, color, and quality can be created in a lab in a matter of days. Colored diamonds, long prized by jewelry wearers and designers, occur only rarely in nature.
How are Lab-Created Diamonds Certified & Graded?
Lab-created diamonds are graded and certified using the same process as mined diamonds. The diamond grading process is roughly the same for all of the diamond certification labs. Each diamond is graded independently by several gemologists at the lab. The individual grades are compiled and analyzed to determine the final grade. The most popular diamond certification labs are:
- Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
- Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC)
- American Gem Society (AGS)
- International Gemological Institute (IGI)
- Gemological Science International (GSI)
The Market Trend of Lab-Created Diamonds–
A new study by MVI Marketing found millennial consumers are increasingly interested in lab-grown diamonds, especially premier diamond-engagement rings (a category that targets millennials).70% of millennials will consider a lab-grown diamond engagement ring. The category’s estimated market value stands at $150 million, but could grow to $1 billion by 2020.
Is there any Real Difference Between the Natural & Man-Made Diamonds?
While the appearance of these can actually have no difference, the great difference between the natural and the man-made diamonds lies with the price. Since the value of the natural diamonds is being controlled by the DeBeers Diamond Cartel, it is perceived that they are being too unrealistic with their price range. Nevertheless, since man-made gems of this variety are often colored, it’s sometimes possible to tell a mined gem from a “lab created” one, since the color in a lab diamond may be more intense, although in every way is a genuine carbon diamond.
Since diamonds began being sold, people have been trying to replicate their luster and sparkle. Just like a natural diamond, each lab-grown diamond is unique and appealing. Today’s stunning man-made diamonds make it easy for anyone to own a stunning gemstone.
